Buyers increasingly skip the search results page. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a question like "What is the best CRM for a 20-person agency?" and get a short list of recommended brands. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making sure your brand is on that list.

How GEO differs from SEO

Classic SEO optimizes a page to rank for a keyword. GEO optimizes a brand entity to be recommended inside a generated answer. The unit of success changes from a click on a blue link to a mention, ideally with a citation, in the answer itself.

The four signals that matter most

  1. Entity clarity. Models need to know exactly who you are. Organization schema with sameAs links to Wikidata, LinkedIn and review profiles removes ambiguity.
  2. Third-party presence. Answers lean on review sites, directories and editorial round-ups. If you are missing there, you are usually missing from the answer.
  3. Citable pages. Clear pricing, comparison and documentation pages give models something concrete to link to.
  4. Crawler access. If robots.txt blocks GPTBot or PerplexityBot, those engines cannot read your site at all.

How to measure GEO

A single ChatGPT test tells you very little, because answers vary between engines and over time. Measure the same questions on every engine, every week, and track four numbers:

  • Mention rate: how often you appear at all.
  • Citation rate: how often the answer links to your website.
  • Share of voice: your mentions compared with your closest competitors.
  • Sentiment: whether the model recommends you enthusiastically, neutrally or with warnings.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Search engines and AI assistants coexist, and many AI answers are grounded in web search results. Good SEO foundations help GEO, but GEO adds new signals such as entity clarity and third-party mentions.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Technical fixes such as schema and crawler access can be picked up quickly by engines that search the web. Changes in what models learned during training take longer, which is why weekly tracking matters.

Which AI assistants should I track?

At minimum ChatGPT and Gemini, plus Perplexity if your buyers research online. Each engine recommends different brands for the same question.
