Ahrefs data pulled on September 28, 2026 shows 1,435 ChatGPT citations to notion.com and 39 to coda.io, a 36.8x gap. Coda holds 19,552 live referring domains against notion.com's 53,969, or 36.2% as many. Domain backlink totals fail to predict the size of this citation gap.

The organic baseline favors Notion

Traditional search already shows a large performance difference. Ahrefs estimates 4,457,562 monthly US organic visits for notion.com and 84,845 for coda.io, placing Coda at 1.9% of Notion's estimate. Coda has 23.2% as many US organic keywords, so the traffic gap exceeds its keyword-count gap.

Notion's legacy notion.so domain carries 145,024 live referring domains. Overlapping sources and redirects prevent a simple addition to notion.com's 53,969. The 36.2% ratio compares coda.io with notion.com alone.

The citation gap depends on the engine

Ahrefs records citation links separately from distinct cited pages. Perplexity gives Coda 364 citations against Notion's 898, a 2.5x Notion lead. ChatGPT widens that lead to 36.8x, which rules out one fixed Notion:Coda ratio across AI products.

Notion draws more links from several prominent hosts. GitHub contributes 573 links to notion.com against 98 to coda.io; Wikipedia contributes 35 against five. Table 3 groups link counts by source host, so each host remains one referring domain regardless of how many pages link out.

G2 links to coda.io four times and notion.com six times; TrustRadius links five and nine times. Those counts cannot explain the 36.8x ChatGPT citation gap through review-site link volume. A review page can inform an answer even when it sends few links to a vendor domain.

Ahrefs records zero links from Reddit, Quora, and Capterra in this source-host slice. Reddit tightened crawler access, which can leave link indexes with gaps; a zero count alone does not establish the cause on every platform. Inspect the source pages and current crawl rules before treating an absent backlink as an absent discussion. Reddit crawler policy announcement.

A US SERP snapshot for "notion vs coda" shows six Google AI Overview sources, all on third-party domains. Reddit and Zapier appear alongside two pages with zero measured referring domains. Neither vendor's own page appears among the six cited sources.

The six cited pages have referring-domain counts of 8, 4, 20, 6, 0, and 0. Their median is five. The cited Reddit thread sits on a DR 95 host yet has eight referring domains of its own, separating host authority from page-level link volume.

Coda's official comparison page

Ahrefs reports 822 live backlinks and six referring domains for coda.io/compare/notion. Two sitewide sources account for 655 backlinks: 525 from indiedemos.com and 130 from naylorgames.com. Their combined share is 79.7%, leaving a large raw backlink count concentrated in a small source set.

Ahrefs finds no referring domain above DR 43 for the comparison page and no backlinks from Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, or the named technology publishers. Its 822 backlinks therefore overstate the breadth of its source base. The page also missed the captured AI Overview, which cited independent comparisons and discussion instead.

The alternatives query tests category reach

A US snapshot for "best notion alternatives" shows no Coda position in the organic top 10 and no Coda citation in the AI Overview. Coda appears as a #coda sitelink inside a Slite listicle. The AI Overview cites two Reddit threads, a Zapier post, a storyflow.so post, and a YouTube video.

Coda has no directly cited source in that captured answer despite its relevance to a Notion alternatives query. The cited pages reveal which comparisons and user accounts Google selected. Repeated SERP captures can show whether the absence persists across dates and locations.

Link indexes expose source concentration; AI citation records identify the URLs engines display alongside answers. Join those datasets by prompt and cited URL to find competitors' strongest evidence. That mapping gives content and PR teams a specific page to improve or an independent source to earn.

Frequently asked questions

Does a bigger backlink footprint predict ChatGPT citations?

The Notion vs Coda data shows it does not, at least at this scale. Coda has 36.2% of notion.com's live referring domains but only 2.7% of its ChatGPT citations. Domain-level link volume alone is a weak predictor of how often ChatGPT cites a vendor.

Why does the Notion vs Coda gap change so much between engines?

Different retrieval and ranking pipelines. Perplexity narrows Notion's lead to 2.5x; ChatGPT widens it to 36.8x; Gemini and Google AI Mode sit between at roughly 7-8x. There is no single Notion:Coda ratio that holds across products, so measurements must be reported per engine.

What sources does Google's AI Overview cite for "notion vs coda"?

In the captured US snapshot, six third-party pages and no vendor-owned page. The cited sources are a Reddit thread, a YouTube video, and comparison posts on Zapier, Slite, Zite, and Productivetemply. Their page-level referring-domain counts are 8, 4, 20, 6, 0, and 0 (median five), which shows host authority alone does not decide which pages the AI Overview surfaces.

Why does Coda's official comparison page have so few referring domains?

The page shows 822 live backlinks from just six referring domains, and 79.7% of those backlinks come from two sitewide sources (indiedemos.com and naylorgames.com). Raw backlink count overstates the breadth of the source base. The page was also absent from the captured AI Overview for "notion vs coda".

What should a vendor do to improve citations for a competitive comparison query?

Identify the specific third-party pages the AI Overview and top AI answers already cite for that query, then either earn coverage on those same independent sources or publish comparable evidence that a review-site editor will link. Improving the vendor's own comparison page in isolation does not affect what the engine displays if the engine is not citing vendor pages for that query.
